Alice Cadfan-Lewis, Doyenne Co-Founder
What is the biggest challenge you've faced as a woman in this field?
One of the toughest periods was after I launched Block Recruit. I fully funded the start-up and ongoing cash flow, often working seven days a week for years to ensure its success. Despite this, rumours circulated that my father had financed the business, implying I hadn’t built it on my own. On another occasion, someone suggested it was my husband who had funded it.
If I had been a man, would people have questioned my independence and achievements in the same way and do men have an advantage in business when it comes to gaining trust in their ability to deliver?
Can you share your happiest memory from your time in the industry?
One of my most memorable moments was at the Doyenne Conference 2023, standing on stage alongside my co-founder, Samantha Massey, and looking out at the incredible women who shape our industry. Seeing them all together in one room, celebrating and supporting each other, was truly inspiring.
Samantha, and to all our ambassadors, I can’t thank you enough. What began as informal networking drinks has grown into something far more meaningful.
At that moment, a thought crossed my mind: "Our work is done here, this means something." Of course, our work is just beginning, and I’m excited to see how it continues to evolve.
How do you balance your professional responsibilities with your personal life?
For many years, I didn’t have balance. I outsourced nearly every aspect of my personal life just so I could work endless hours. Mentally, it took a huge toll, missing my son’s birthday, crying in the toilets at industry events because I wasn’t at his school play, being unrecognised by teachers at pick-up, and putting strain on my relationship because I was so stressed. I completely lost perspective at times.
It wasn’t until I sought help from a counsellor that things started to shift. He explained that my overworking wasn’t helping, it was holding me back. He challenged the belief that productivity and success require relentless hours and showed me that there is another way.
That conversation gave me the permission I needed to step back and set boundaries, redefining what I wanted my work and personal life to look like. Today I am happy to say I have this covered and now help others to do the same. I am still human though, so don't get me wrong I still have times when I have to check in with myself because I have slipped back into old habits.
What has had the most significant impact on your life and why?
Moving to Ibiza definitely. While those who know me well, are aware of my love for a good party and dancing. It’s the island’s nature, its people, and its unique energy that have truly transformed me though.
I think I came here to heal—from years of putting myself last—and to learn from the incredible holistic therapists we’re so fortunate to have on the island.
It’s opened up a new path, one that feels deeply aligned and, in many ways, something I’ve been seeking for a long time.
Would you rather have the ability to speak all languages fluently or be a master of every musical instrument?
I should probably say languages—I’ve been learning Spanish for four years now, and it’s still a challenge. When will I finally move past JUST being able to say, “I have a dog”? Hahaha!
But for me, music is the real winner. I currently play the saxophone and piano, and I’m planning to start drumming lessons next year.
If you could only eat one food for the rest of your life, what would it be?
Chocolate!
What's a personal goal you are currently working towards?
In 2025, I am beginning a Psychology with Counselling degree. Combining this with my holistic qualifications, I aim to integrate psychotherapy and holistic practices to support those dealing with stress or emotional challenges through my new business, Mind Body Spirit Ibiza
How do you unwind after a long day at work?
I have many tools from my holistic work but one of my favourite ways is going onto my roof terrace and watching the sunset. There's a calm, grounding energy at that time of day. In the winter months, it’s stargazing, which reminds me to keep perspective.
What's your favourite inspirational quote or mantra?
I have many! I am not sure if this is one I have made up or not but throughout the day I ask myself “Where are you now Alice” It reminds me to stay present and not get lost in the endless dysfunctional thinking mind.
What is the biggest lesson you have learnt in life?
When we look for happiness or our sense of self through achievements, possessions, money, work, relationships, or recognition from others it will only ever be temporary. At some point, discontent will set in again. Lasting joy and peace come from living in the present moment, free from the egoic mind.
